Performance Management in IT sector

Performance as you may know is s contradicting subject as it is governed by different factors. The factors underlining the Performance are not set and the management needs to identify scales to measure performance of its employees in a fairly manner. The Performance in the eye of a Manager is completing expected tasks by an individual without any negative impact to overall company goals. The individual who understands this aspect tries to be smarter and to achieve the expectations of the manager to get the certification of “Performed up to the expected levels”.

In some situations, there are few individuals who deviates from this aspect. One individual who is not happy with the expectations of the Manager or due to any personal or external factors does not meet the expectations of the Manager. Either the tasks carried out have a negative impact to the Company or the tasks which have being allocated are not completed by the individual. These individuals are categorized under “Non – Performances” and the Company is no longer willing to keep their employment with them. The third category of employees are the set of individuals who pay an extra effort to create a change within the company. The change they attempt to create can enhance the Company goals or it can cause deviations to the Company goals. Depending on the impact it creates to the Company, the individual become high performer or weak performer.

The company need to identify weather targets goals by these categories of individuals clearly before taking any actions. Identification of these individuals are strategic. Managers panic when high performers are in their team, as it is a threat to them. The Companies panic when goals of the high performers deviate from the company.

However, Performance is situational a person who is performing in one environment may or may not be able to perform in another environment. The individuals change from category to category in different environments. In one environment an individual can fall into Performed level and in one environment the same individual can fall into Non- Performance category. Identification of the individuals in the categories are important while identifying the reason of them belonging to the particular category is also important.
